The City of Belgrade is the centre of economic and cultural activities in Serbia and the wider region. The capacity and condition of the existing transportation system have been close to saturation resulting in congestion and poor service provision. This has been expected to worsen over time, given the rising urban population and constant increase in the number of registered cars in Belgrade, as well as the growing mobility demands of the population.
Following the implementation of Phase I of the Belgrade Urban Renewal Project focusing on the rehabilitation of the main transport corridors in the city (17.5 km), Phase II aimed to provide more capacity and enhance the quality of urban public transport in Belgrade.
Phase II was focused on further improvement of road and tram infrastructure, assistance in traffic management, and enhancement of the City’s ability to manage and protect the street assets once these have been modernised. The priorities included tram track reconstruction and new track maintenance along the main city streets in Old Belgrade and New Belgrade with general street and square refurbishment and reconstruction, as well as traffic management installation on certain sections.
WBIF has provided technical assistance for an update of the City’s transport master plan, SmartPlan (including a Strategic Environmental Assessment in conformity with EU Directives); preparation of eligible investments (including feasibility studies and detailed design of the eligible investment components); and targeted capacity building and implementation support for a Project Management Unit (PMU).
