In order to improve the difficult situation in the health sector in Republika Srpska, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has introduced a general reform process with the aim to ease the burden on public finances and deliver adequate healthcare to citizens.
In the scope of the reform, it was envisaged to undertake the reconstruction of the clinical centre in Banja Luka and the construction of a new hospital in Bijeljina. In parallel, education reform was planned with a stronger focus on practical experience in the curricula for medical training, including reform of nursing education.
To support these efforts, WBIF has provided technical assistance in two phases. Phase 1 concerned the preparation of a Feasibility Study for the facilities to be developed including the Conceptual Design of the buildings. Phase 2 concerned the Preliminary Design of the Medical Faculty, the R&D Centre, the Faculty for Healthcare Professionals and the Secondary Medical School. An update of the equipment list and the budget for the construction and operation of the facilities was also included. Finally, an analysis of health care professionals' education in RS has been performed resulting in guidelines for the education of nurses and other health care professionals.
