Serbia, Flood Risk Management Programme for Central Serbia: Flood Risk Management Plan, Strategic Environmental Assessment

Project Description

Serbia is one of the few European countries with very high exposure to natural hazards, especially floods. Since 2000, Serbia has faced several extreme weather episodes and flood events that caused high material and financial losses, as well as losses of human lives.

Based on the preliminary assessment carried out in 2011 and updated in 2019 by the Government of Serbia, 99 sites have been identified as areas of significant risk of floods with adverse consequences for human health, the environment, economic activities, and cultural heritage.

Building on these results, WBIF has allocated a technical assistance grant for the development of the Flood Risk Management Plan (FRMP) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for four river basins in Central Serbia - Kolubara, Zapadna Morava, Južna Morava and Velika Morava. The FRMP will identify, prioritise, and optimise measures that should be implemented to reach flood risk management objectives in order to reduce risks and damages and to protect people, the environment, the economy, and cultural heritage sites.
