Montenegro Wastewater and Water Supply Projects - Technical Assistance in Project Implementation - Supervision of Works for Podgorica WWTP Design and Build

Project Description

Podgorica is serviced by a wastewater plant built in the 1970s, which is well under the capacity and level of treatment required by present demand. About 50% of the effluent is discharged untreated into the Moraca River and then, further on, into the Skadar Lake - a Ramsar wetland area jointly managed by Montenegro and Albania.

In order to contribute to the improvement of the hygienic conditions in the City of Podgorica, safeguard the potable water resources, and preserve the environment in the areas located downstream and under the influence of the Moraca River and Lake Skadar, WBIF has supported the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant for the city, a sludge incineration plant, and extension of the sewerage network.

This WBIF technical assistance grant finances the supervision of works for the first three components of the investment programme - construction of a wastewater treatment plant, sewage sludge treatment plant and sewage sludge incineration plant for the City of Podgorica.
