Approximately 491 km of rivers in Kosovo* are under the risk of flooding; the level of flood risk and economic damage arising from flooding are exacerbated by anthropogenic factors including poor condition of river canals arising from: insufficient maintenance of flood canals; poor condition of flood embankments; damage to flood embankments; and, insufficient maintenance of the infrastructure. Over time, even parts of existing protective infrastructure (embankments, dams, walls etc.) suffered multiple damages. The available data indicate that this infrastructure is significantly damaged. In many segments there is an urgent need for intervention with rehabilitation measures and in some segments even with completely new constructions.
In December 2017, the WBIF approved a €600,000 technical assistance grant to prepare a Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment as well as a Feasibility Study, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Preliminary Design. These studies will identify the most urgent investments needed to repair past damages on the embankment, local roads, and other infrastructure in the river basins of Drini I Bardhe, Sitnica and Morava e Binces.
