Comprehensive Network (Road R9a): Construction of Brčko Bypass

Comprehensive Network (Road R9a): Construction of Brčko Bypass

Project Description

More than 40,000 people live in Brcko City, while another 50,000 inhabit the rest of the District. There are two main routes which cross Brcko, creating serious traffic congestion issues in the city: (a) the east-west Loncari – Brcko – Bijeljina road, which is primarily used by traffic between Banja Luka to Bijeljina and beyond, into Serbia; and (b) the north-south Tuzla - Loncari – Orasje road, which links one of the main industrial towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia.

In order to deviate traffic away from the city, Brcko secured a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to construct a two-lane 18.7 km carriageway bypassing the city. The new carriageway will integrate with the east-west route running from Loncari, Brcko, Bijeljina to the Serbian border.
The WBIF (EU) grant has provided project management support to the Beneficiary/Partner, including assistance with tendering, as well as independent monitoring of project progress.

The project is currently under construction, with Spring 2019 tentatively set for commissioning.
