Bijeljina is a city and municipality in the northeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city is home to more than 110,000 inhabitants and thus the second largest in Republika Srpska. The Municipality initiated a water and wastewater rehabilitation programme in order to meet current water and wastewater service demand as well as to prevent environmental pollution by the direct discharge of untreated sewage into water bodies.
The programme has been phased out in three stages. Sewerage and water supply systems were included in Phase I, and construction was completed in 2010. Phase II focused on the construction of a modern wastewater treatment plant as well as on further expanding the sewerage and water supply network. Phase III will cover the construction of the main sewage collector to the proposed wastewater treatment plant.
The WBIF provided €3.5 million in grants to cover procurement support and capacity building as well as investment works. Construction works for Phase II - water network, one of the two sewage collectors, as well as the wastewater treatment plant - are now complete and in operation.
