Modernisation of Tabanovce - Gevgelija Railway Line: ETCS Level 1 for Rail Corridor X and Improvement of Signalling Along the Macedonian Railway Network

Project Description

The section of the Pan-European Corridor X in North Macedonia connects Serbia with Greece, from the state border with Serbia near Tabanovce via Kumanovo-Skopje-Veles to the state border with Greece near Gevgelija. Also, Branch Xd of the same Corridor connects Veles via Prilep to the state border with Greece near to Kremenica.

The introduction of the ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 1 is the first step of the train control system of choice of ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System). ETCS, signalling and control component of the ERTMS, is also a key system recommended by the European Commission in order to contribute to the interoperability of the European rail networks.

This WBIF technical assistance grant funded the preparation of a Pre-feasibility study for introducing ETCS Level 1 along Rail Corridor X and improvements of the signalling along the Macedonian railway network. Specifically, the study included strategic and technical options analysis, preparation of conceptual designs, institutional capacity assessment, bill of quantities, Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Cost Effectiveness Analysis (CEA), procurement documents and plan, and environmental considerations.
