Special Inspection of 106 tunnels and Development of the Main Designs for their Rehabilitation

Project Description

The line Bar - Podgorica - Vrbnica is the main railroad in Montenegro, transporting around 20% of the passenger and 60% of the freight volumes. The line passes through mountainous areas and, due to the difficult terrain, has many structures, including 106 tunnels with a total length of nearly 52 km.

All the tunnels on the line are affected by small to large-scale damage, and rehabilitation works of the tunnel lining are necessary in order to avoid rapid deterioration, protect and ensure the stability of the tunnels’ structure, and prevent their partial collapse on tracks and traffic disruption.

In order to identify all damages, defects and weaknesses for which rehabilitation works are necessary, WBIF has financed the detailed inspection of 106 tunnels and 14 galleries on the railway line Bar-Vrbnica (Component 1 of technical assistance).

Based on the results of Component 1 and additional structural investigations, Component 2 of technical assistance was implemented. It encompassed the identification of a prioritised list of tunnel rehabilitation and the preparation of detailed designs and works tender documents for the remediation of prioritised tunnels.
