The prospect of establishing an LNG terminal in Omialj, on the island of Krk, is of exceptional energy strategic significance for Croatia. Once built, not only that it would transport gas to cater to domestic demand but also feed into neighbouring countries' systems. The LNG evacuation gas pipeline will consist of:
The construction of the evacuation pipeline will enable the transmission of natural gas from the future LNG terminal on the island of Krk to the customers; natural gas transmission to the wider European market; and provides options for gasification of the island of Krk. Further improvements include reduction of CO2 emissions in the region; facilitation of economic development; and an introduction of an ecologically sound energy source in the region (replacement for firewood, coal, and fuel oil).
The WBIF has allocated a €180,000 EU grant to assist with the preparation of the feasibility study, including the environmental impact assessment and preliminary design. The study was carried out by the Instractucture Project Facility 2 in 2013. The continuation of preparatory work is contingent on progress on PRJ-HRV-ENE-003 - LNG Regasification Vessel.
