The municipality of Andrijevica is located 150 km from the capital Podgorica, in the north-eastern part of Montenegro on the left bank of the Lim river, with an altitude between 760 and 2400 m. The municipality has a population of 5,100 inhabitants, from which 990 inhabitants live in the urban settlements of the municipality.
A general problem in the water supply system in the municipality of Andrijevica was an obsolescence of the pipelines (asbestos pipes, physical reduction of the pipe diameter through deposits and incrustations inside of pipes, water leaks, etc.). The most important issue was to secure the water supply from the water source Krkori to the urban settlements. Therefore the reconstruction of the pipeline was recognised by the municipal Multiannual Investment Plan as a priority investment.
The Municipality has implemented the action in two phases as follows:
Segment 1: the most downstream 4.5 km pipeline (High density Polyethylen pipe, diameter 360mm, pressure 16 bars), linking to the Andrijevica urban settlement. This segment was the most urgent and was started first.
Segment 2: a pipeline section of 7 km constructed upstream of Segment 1. The segment 1 and segment 2 pipelines, which delivers drinking water to the urban settlement, constitute the project in Andrijevica.
