Description Tirana region, the most densely populated area in Albania, is located in the centre of Albania and accounts for near 1 million inhabitants. Construction, trade and services are the main economic activities that are rapidly expanding to meet the growing interaction between Albania and the international community. Durres, with an overall population of near 450,000 inhabitants, is a popular seaside resort area as it is within easy driving distance of Tirana of 35 km (many of the residents of Tirana have a cottage by the seaside as a weekend retreats). Durres is the main port of Albania, central point of the railway system and central point of the road system. It is also the main storage depot of imports and is used as an exit point for both Albania and Macedonian products. Currently the electricity supply for Tirana and Durres (including Rrogozhina) is not reliable and continuous. The transmission system is overloaded and electricity gets cut-off frequently but for short intervals. The study will help to strengthen power transmission system between Tirana (capital of Albania) and Durres (second largest town) who providing reliability and continuity of electricity supply for near half of Albania’s population and over 1/3 of private businesses operators (construction, trade, services and manufacturing). The study will identify, elaborate and select the best technical approach (including phasing and sequencing) for the construction of the double circuit 220kV line Tirana 2 - Rrashbull, and the construction of the proposed new 220/110 kV substation in Rrogozhina. The study will take into account technical, financial and economic criteria, and will include appropriate socio-environmental considerations. co-financing is envisaged from KfW
