All of the countries in the Western Balkans are making progress in the adoption and implementation of the EU’s environmental acquis which provides the overall framework for environmental policy. In addition to the various national bodies, a number of regional initiatives support the countries in their efforts notably the Regional Environmental Network for Accession (RENA) which covers monitoring, investment, compliance, climate change, cross border and inspection issues.
In November 2011, the IFI Coordination Office hosted a workshop in the environment sector for environment officers from IFIs and the European Commission on the application of EIA and Nature-related Directives. Ensuring environmental compliance and the application of EIA and nature-related directives, where those have not yet been fully transposed in the beneficiaries’ legislation, is a key issue for IFIs for project preparation and implementation. The workshop was the occasion to discuss and advance common solutions, and for IFIs and the EC to give an update of their activities in Environment in the Western Balkans.
